FAQs
What should you wear for gym training vs cardio workouts?
While there is some overlap between gym training and general cardio workouts, gym training also covers a range of strength and weightlifting, stretches and mobility-focused work, etc.
Gym training
For the non-cardio focused gym training exercises, you’ll want to take the following into consideration when choosing your gym wear:
- For most activities that don’t involve long stints of running, it’s good to go with a pair of training shoes - they typically have a flat sole that offer better stability for almost all forms of weightlifting and other non-running exercises.
- In terms of clothing, focus on pieces that have durable, flexible fabrics and allow for a full range of motion. Gym shorts also tend to be better-suited to weightlift-focused work.
Cardio workouts
While cardio doesn’t just involve running (they also include HIIT, cycling, hiking, etc.) you’ll find many of these exercises benefit from similar gear.
- For shoes, either training shoes or running shoes can be a good option depending on the exercise. Running shoes are, naturally, best suited to any form of running exercises (including using treadmills). Training shoes are a good option when taking on training regiments that alternate between different cardio workouts (HIIT, short sprints, dancing and Zumba classes, etc.).
- For your tops, focus on gear that features breathable, moisture-wicking fabrics.
- With the range of movement and strides often involved in most cardio workouts, we recommend lightweight running shorts for both men and women.
Are PUMA training clothes breathable for Australian climates?
Yes, a lot of PUMA training gear is designed to be breathable and effectively wick away moisture for comfort during prolonged workouts. No matter the type of training you’re undertaking, chances are you’re going to work up a sweat in the Aussie climate - whether you’re indoors or outdoors. So, to ensure maximum exercising comfort, our range has been designed for optimum breathability and moisture-wicking.
How should gym clothes fit for performance and comfort?
This can differ depending on the specific workouts you undertake but, generally speaking, you’ll typically want gym clothes that provide a degree of breathability and movement without being too loose. After all, whether you’re doing cardio, weightlifting, stretching or other exercises, gear that is too restrictive can limit your range of movement and also make it harder for your sweat to evaporate during intensive workout sessions.
For certain exercises, such as yoga or pilates, you may want tops and bottoms that are a little more form-fitting, but just make sure that they’re made from materials that can stretch and easily support your range of movements.
Are PUMA training shoes good for cross-training?
Absolutely. Training shoes, which are also known as cross-trainers, are specifically designed for various forms of cross-training, such as HIIT (High-Intensity Interval Training), weightlifting, agility drills, and varying gym classes.
Typically, training shoes include key design elements that make them well-suited to varying activities. These include a focus on stability through the use of lower heel-to-toe drops and firmer, flatter midsoles that provide a stable platform for lifting. They also sport better lateral support for side-to-side movements when compared to running shoes, which are designed for forward motion.
The use of durable materials allow training shoes to stand up to high-intensity movements such as jumping, burpees, and rope climbs, and more. It’s thanks to this versatility in function that makes them the go-to choice for people who enjoy engaging in cross-training. This includes the ability to use them for shorter warm-up runs before a cross-training session begins.
How do you choose gym wear for hot vs cold conditions?
In general, regardless of weather, you can use most of your typical gym wear year-round, particularly when it comes to your tops and shoes. If you mostly workout in the gym, you may not need to make any alterations to your gear whatsoever.
However, if you prefer outdoor runs or working out at the many outdoor public gym setups in Australia, this is where you’ll want to dress accordingly. The main recommendations we’d make are to invest in hoodies, sweatshirts, training tights and pants for women, and jogger pants for men.
All of these still provide a solid degree of movement for varying exercises, from cardio to weightlifting - and the vast majority utilise PUMA’s dryCELL technology to ensure sweat is wicked away from the skin so you can perform for longer.
Can you wear training gear casually outside the gym?
Absolutely. Our training gear isn't just well-suited to gym settings, but can easily be worn for outdoor workouts - whether you’re doing laps around a track or using public workout equipment. Thanks to the versatility of designs and materials, our breathable and durable training gear can handle a range of elements and provide exceptional comfort for your outdoor activities or casual wear, no matter the weather.
